When I’m looking for danger and fantastic dialogue, I pick up THE DEMON’S LEXICON series by Sarah Rees Brennan. And when I’m feeling romantic, I like to read (and reread) ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS by Stephanie Perkins. My favorite summer escape book is THE DAY BEFORE by Lisa Schroeder;which takes place on the Oregon coast, and is the perfect length for a day at the beach!
A NEED SO BEAUTIFUL is set in Portland, Oregon, and the Northwest is the perfect summer escape. If you get a chance to visit, you’ll have to stop by VooDoo Doughnuts and try Charlotte’s favorite: the bacon maple bar.
Another fantastic place to check out is the famous Powell’s Books, which has an extensive collection of new and used books; not to mention awesome author events.
Although the bridge in A NEED SO BEAUTIFUL is fictional, Portland is known for its numerous bridges. And none are as stunning as the Saint John’s Bridge.
So come on up to Portland! Perfect summer climate and tons of waterfront festivals make it a great escape!
Sometimes, you’ve just got to get away. Maybe the sun is shining too temptingly outside your office window, or maybe it’s just too hot outside to move more than your index finger. On those days you need an escape.
This summer, I’ve found my escape in the following, incredible books (and I didn’t even need a plane ticket!):
DIE FOR ME by Amy Plum
When the summer doldrums hit, you can get any LESS “blah” than Paris! This novel, which introduces us to the orphaned Kate Mercier and a group of gorgeous but dangerous immortals, gives me just the right mix of uh-oh and oh-la-la.
SUPERNATURALLY by Kiersten White
The second book of the PARANORMALCY trilogy gets us back to the hilarious Miss Evie and her hot-pink Taser. But this time, we’re following Evie into her supposedly “normal” life-which means enough scenes involving school sports and lockers to balance out an endless summer!
GRAVEMINDER by Melissa Marr
Melissa Marr (the author of the WICKED LOVELY series) serves up major creepiness in her first adult novel. The walking undead? Perfectly chilling for a summer day that tops out at 100 degrees.
DEAD RULES by Randy Russell
Think the movie HEATHERS meets the movie BEETLEJUICE. Add an undead love interest that makes me wish he was real and the result is DEAD RULES, one of the funniest and freshest YA novels I’ve read in a long time. Escapism in the best possible way.
